Had fun!

This is the fun I had yesterday afternoon. I sooo enjoyed doing this little thing. With the help of a tutorial from Dawn at The Feathered Nest, I built it inside an old rusty Monopole cigar(?) tin, which measures only 8x12cm (3x5in). The one in the tutorial was much bigger, without a lid, and she used a vintage print of a bird. I do like mine, but just feel that maybe it needs something or is missing something. Just not sure. Perhaps it's the little bird I used instead of a print. I've been wanting to try an assemblage/collage with little birds/nest/eggs for a while and couldn't resist when I saw this one. I have a bigger wooden cigar box that I'll use next time, minus it's lid.
Oh yes....those little fluffy bundles you can see beside the tin are my attempts to create the right colour and size nest that I needed! At least I now have a small supply for any future projects. :)

We have a couple of Brazilian Cherry(subtropical) trees in our yard and they are holding a lot of fruit at the moment. With the strong winds we've been having here just lately, a lot of them are ending up on the ground, so I thought I would pick some before it was too late to eat them. The pic of them came up so pretty. If you pick them too soon they can be very tart! I really like the flavour when properly ripe. It's quite sweet but with a little sourness hiding in there. If I don't get to them early enough, though, they all end up fruit fly blown. Ick. If they don't get eaten I'll often try to make a jelly from them.
This the tree with all the fruit on them, but the pic hasn't come up very well to show them all up. You just get to see a view of our wild back yard! lol.

The big happening here yesterday was a huge dust storm! I think the most effected areas (and don't quote me here) were NSW and Qld up the east coast. The awful red dust was picked up from out west (in the middle of the country) and blown down around to the south-east and back up north through the two States. The pic below is from our front path and up the street opposite. I took it around 9am and the dust stayed around for much of the day. Even inside there was an eerie yellow glow all about. So glad we closed all the windows and doors here! Mind you, we now have a champagne/apricot coloured cat instead of a white one! :) She was obviously lying around all over the place on every surface that had the dust on it. But we have to be grateful that there wasn't as much dust as Sydney copped, by the time it got here.

  1. Pam, Your little tin turned out beautifully! I love it!
Those cherries look very different from anything I've seen. They look like tiny, red pumpkins. hehe
Hope the dust is all gone now...how awful!

  4. Thanks so much to all of you ladies. Helps to get the feedback.

Debi: Good thing they don't taste like pumpkins! :) Dust all gone now. Woke up yesterday to beautiful clear day, but they say we will probably get more of it next week. Just not at much. x

Clare: Lovely tasting berries as well. Yummm

Chris: Lol. Outdo me as much as you like! They are amazing pics. Thanks for them.
Are you ready for a repeat performance next week!? Heard this morning that it might not make it quite this far, but inland in NSW and a tiny bit inland here. Also heard that the clean up bill is likely to run to the ten's of millions for Sydney!!! Hugs back. x

  5. Pam, the bird box is great, what could it be missing? A squawking, begging beak in the nest? I like it just the way it is. And how was the visit to your sister's? You can't mention things and not follow up, it's like missing the last page of a book. Am jealous of the cherries. Still eating mulberries though. Yummmmmmm

  6. Hi Pam, was going to say that you seem a world away (which of course you are!!). Those Brazilian cherries look so very, very exotic. Loved the description of the peach coloured cat! Made me laugh! Your box with the bird is beautiful, it really is. Can sympathise re the dust storm, I lived in Aden as a child and we had them there on a regular basis. The skies are something else when the storm is on its way...... x

  8. Sandy: Cheeky b*gger! But thank you.
(For anyone reading this: Sandybottoms is the sister mentioned!! Who by the way wanted me to take pics of all the food we ate and show it on this blog. lol.)
Never fear sister dear, I fully intend putting up your recipe, soon, for Impossible Quiche.
How can you be jealous of the cherries when you have all those scrummy mulberries???? :))xxx

Cathy: Thanks so much, and I intend doing a bigger one soon!
The cat is still coloured, coz we haven't yet been able to clean off all surfaces yet, and we had another small dust invasion again last night(last one we hope). We are still under water restrictions here due to the drought conditions we had earlier in the year, but from tomorrow(I think it is) we'll be able to hose houses and cars etc down for a period of 9 days.
Looked Aden up in Google Earth, and I can certainly see why you would have so many dust storms there!!! x
